DIY Hair Mask Hacks You Can Do at Home

DIY Hair Mask Hacks You Can Do at Home

With the world in lockdown to halt the spread of COVID-19, we’re all spending A LOT of time at home. No Friday night drinks, no trips to the gym, and no hairdresser visits. But – with these DIY hair mask hacks – your locks don’t have to suffer like your social life.

We know it seems indulgent to worry about beauty RN, but in times of uncertainty, self-care rituals can be incredibly therapeutic. So, grab your Like A Virgin Hair Masque, head to the kitchen, and get ready for a soothing pamper sesh!

Here are 7 unBALIevable DIY hair mask hacks – using common household ingredients – that will supercharge your results!

1. Pre-cleanse with apple cider vinegar

Limp, weighed down strands? Treat your hair to a volume boosting deep cleanse! A pantry staple, clarifying apple cider vinegar is amazing for reducing product build up and removing excess oils. With anti-fungal properties, it also helps restore balance to the scalp, smooths hair cuticles and boosts shine!

For the perfect pre-cleanse before applying your Like A Virgin Nourishing Hair Masque, add 5 parts water to 1 part ACV and mix together. If you have one, use a spray bottle and thoroughly spritz your scalp and strands. Otherwise, use a jug or jar and pour carefully on your scalp and hair. Work the mix through evenly with your fingers. Let sit for 5 minutes, then rinse thoroughly before applying your favourite hair masque.

Tip: Avoid using on very dry hair, and make sure the vinegar is well diluted – you definitely shouldn’t feel a burning sensation.

2. Nourish with a little honey

A great DIY hair mask hack for strands that are super-dry and brittle? Add a little honey, honey! For extra hydration and moisture, simply mix two teaspoons of honey into your Coconut & Fig Hair Mask.

Your parched locks will drink up the restorative goodness, look extra lustrous and feel soft as silk. You’ll also benefit from reduced breakage, while banishing any frizz.

To use: Apply your supercharged hair mask to towel-dried hair, brush through evenly with your tangle tamer and pop on a hair towel wrap or shower cap to prevent any sticky honey drips. Leave on for 10 mins, or overnight for crazy soft, silky results.

3. Add sugar to create a 2-in-1 hair scrub & mask

Don’t be a flake – exfoliate your scalp while masking! Adding 4 teaspoons of raw sugar to your Like A Virgin Masque will help remove dead skin cells and boost scalp circulation, helping to promote healthy hair that’s full of life.

To use: Mix a generous dollop of your Coco & Eve hair mask plus sugar together in a bowl. Apply to damp hair, from roots to ends. Massage into the scalp gently for 2-3 minutes, then wrap up hair and wait another 3-7 minutes before rinsing.

4. Add avocado to supercharge repair

As a general rule, anything that’s good enough to put on your plate will have major benefits for your hair – and avocado is no exception. Great for your insides, your skin and your locks, avocado is the ultimate beauty food.

Packed with vitamins, good fats and natural oils to soften, hydrate and repair, a little added avo leaves stressed-out locks smooth, shiny and ultra-manageable. Vitamins B and E are also beneficial for healthy hair growth.

To supercharge your mask: Check your fruit bowl for an avocado that’s getting soft and squishy. (Hey, avocadoes are expensive and delicious so don’t waste one that’s good to eat!) Scoop out ½ the flesh, mash and mix into your mask. Hair mask up, chill out and rinse after 10 minutes’ me-time.

5. Squeeze in some lemon to brighten

If you’re struggling without your monthly colourist appointment during lockdown, a DIY hair mask hack that will see you through is to add a little lemon.

An astringent with antimicrobial properties, lemon helps support a healthy scalp (and dandruff prevention) by tightening hair follicles. Naturally dullness defeating, it reduces excess oil while its clarifying and lightening powers give dingy highlights a welcome lift.

So, when life gives you lemons? Make sure you squeeze them!

To use:
Squeeze 2 teaspoons of lemon juice into your mask. Mix. Massage the mask into your scalp, distribute evenly through your strands and leave for 10 minutes before rinsing. For intensive brightening, leave for up to an hour.

6. Ditch dandruff with baking soda

Nobody likes a sprinkling of dandruff on their self-isolation sweater. Thankfully, you can tackle the problem head on with this DIY hair mask hack!

The multi-tasking hero of every home, a sprinkling of baking soda on the scalp has long been a popular home remedy for preventing dandruff. It’s also used by followers of the ‘no-poo’ movement to cleanse hair of oil and build up.

To shake off flakes: Create a fine paste by mixing 2-3 tablespoons of baking soda with water. Apply to your scalp and leave for 5-10 minutes. Rinse thoroughly, then follow with your Like A Virgin Hair Masque to replenish moisture and deeply nourish.

7. Soothe your scalp with green tea

Antioxidant all-star green tea isn’t just a health elixir, it’s a hair saviour as well! Soothing and balancing to the scalp, it has also been suggested that green tea can promote hair growth.

So, if your scalp is itchy or irritated, pop the kettle on!

To use: Pour 1 cup of green tea (let it cool first!) onto the scalp. Massage into the scalp, leave for 5 minutes, then rinse off. Now your scalp is calm and content, show your hair a lotta love with your 5-in-1 Like A Virgin Hair Mask!

Customer tan-formations

This was my first time ever self tanning and I had the best first experience thanks to this tan! I was scared at first, but this tan really did wonders for me! As someone who burns easily in the sun, this is the perfect damage-free solution to tan!
This is the best fake tan I have ever worn. I've tried all of the popular ones like St. Tropez, but this is a cut above the rest! No orange tone and it wears away slowly and evenly.
FINALLY! I have a tan which is actually good for my skin and doesn't contain all the nasty, awful chemicals. It gave a really nice olive colour on my skin. I've never had so many compliments!
I've always avoided fake tan as my skin is very dry and sensitive. I tried Coco & Eve and my skin felt sooo nourished, smelt unreal and I didn't have any dry patches where my fake tan would usually cling to.
Sunny Honey gave me the most beautiful tan and perfected imperfections & cellulite on my legs. I loved using the kabuki brush on my feet and hands to ensure an even application. Zero complaints from me!
This was my first time using fake tan, all my fears of a fake tan disaster have disappeared. Bye bye milk bottles, hello bronzed pins!

Obsessed with how perfectly golden this leaves my skin! Best part: this is the WORLDS FIRST fake tan formula to help reduce cellulite AND have anti aging
It smells sooo good and tropical! I like how this doesn’t apply super dark and develops over the 2 hours you have to wait before washing it off! The mitt is EVERYTHING! I’m obsessed with this and it wasn’t too dark, just enough to make me not as pale!!
I am an avid fan on fake tan and have been using it for years. Trust me when I say I have tried almost every self tan under the sun (pardon the pun). Now that I've used the Coco & Eve self tan I won't go back to any others! The colour is divine, not orange at all, sooo natural and dark (I buy the ultra dark and it's the deepest one I've ever found). No patches or streaks either! And OMG the scent too! It's an absolute god send. Please never change Coco & Eve!
My skin can get dull and dry so I was impressed at the glowy results of this fake tan!! It deeply hydrates my skin, making it extraaa soft. It is so easy to apply making me a golden goddess. This tan is great for Brown girls too!
I've always avoided fake tan as I have very dry sensitive skin and i've had a few bad experiences with patchy colour. I tried Coco & Eve fake tan and my skin felt sooooooo moisturised it was unreal. No patches where i had dry skin, no bad smell and no orange mess!
